Chances are probably pretty good that you have heard about dental crowns before. After all, they have been around for a long time. Of course, many people have them but nowadays you can’t usually tell. From the office of our Honolulu, HI, dentist, Dr. Garrett Hayashi, find out more about dental crowns and the many ways they can improve your smile.

What is a dental crown and why is it used?

A dental crown is a hollow restoration that is designed to look like the crown of a real tooth. There are many reasons why our Honolulu general dentist may recommend getting a dental crown:

  • If you have a weakened tooth
  • If you have a cracked, fractured or broken tooth
  • If you have undergone root canal therapy
  • If you have a severely malformed or discolored tooth
  • If you need to support a dental bridge
  • If you are getting a dental implant to replace a missing tooth

As you may already be able to glean from this list, a crown is most often used to cover a tooth that is weak or damaged. It’s an easy yet effective way to protect a tooth from further damage while also improving function, strength, integrity and appearance. There is so much a dental crown can do to boost the health of a tooth.

What should I expect if I get a dental crown?

Getting a dental crown usually takes a couple visits to our office. First, we will need to determine that you are an ideal candidate for crowns. We will also talk to you about other treatment options so that you know that this is the best restoration for you.

Then we will need to prepare the tooth for your crown. This means that we will have to prepare the tooth so that the crown can fit over it.

We will also place dental putty over your teeth to make a mold of your smile. A dental lab will use this mold to create your custom-fitted crown. Once the crown is ready to go over your teeth we will place it, check the fit and your bite, and then cement it into place.
