Honolulu's Premier Dental Implants
Are you an otherwise healthy adult who is missing one or more teeth? If so, our dental team at Garrett T. Hayashi, DDS here in Honolulu,
HI, understands just how frustrating this can be. There are millions of Americans dealing with tooth loss. Fortunately, in this day of modern dental technology, our team is able to provide you with the next best thing to a real tooth: a dental implant.
A dental implant is a small metal post that functions just like tooth roots. Dr. Hayashi will place the implant into a small, pre-drilled hole in the jawbone. Something a lot of people don’t realize is the importance of tooth roots for the health of your jawbone. When you lose a tooth, the jawbone no longer receives the ample stimulation it needs from all of your tooth roots. As a result, this can lead to bone loss. By getting implants as quickly as possible after losing a tooth you can prevent significant and serious bone loss.
Once the implant is placed into the jawbone we will give your mouth several months to heal. During this healing phase, a very important phenomenon occurs. This phenomenon is known as osseointegration. This is where the jawbone and tissue fuse together with the metal implant to become one. Now, the implant is a permanent fixture within the jawbone, making it a very reliable and stable foundation from which to support a false tooth.
There are many different kinds of dental implants. Dr. Hayashi will discuss the different dental implant options and help you decide which one is right for you. For example, some implants have a built-in abutment, which sits above the gums and connects the metal implant with the false tooth. In other instances, the abutment has to be attached to the top of the implant during another minor procedure.
If you only need to replace a single missing tooth then a single implant will be placed within the jawbone and a dental crown will be created and cemented over top of the implant; however, dental implants can also be used to replace several missing teeth. In this case, four or more implants are placed along the jawbone and used to support dentures. This can be a great and more stable alternative for patients who are already wearing dentures but experience issues with the false teeth moving or shifting around.
